You're right there. I have had a few near escapes through there but a) it's a much faster route home (provided you make it home!) and b) being 1940 the lure of a channel full of British ships to shoot down (without too much relative danger) was a bit too tempting.
It was only 1940 or early '41 so I had been able to get away with it thus far. My mistake was probably trying to cruise along underwater with the convoy so I could wait until it formed up again and take some more of them down with the next round of torpedos i'd had loaded.
Should've cut my losses and headed home, but as said in the story - 4 torps wasted and only 1 boat down - I wanted to get something more out of the situation.
