Well with the Nvidia FX-5900 I used version 61.77 drivers, and these were the only drivers that would show black smoke most of the time, no matter what angle viewed.
Btw, sometimes Sh3 would revert back to white-smoke using these drivers.
To get black smoke again, first I had to pause the game, press 'ALT-ESC' to the desktop, then back into SH3 again. Then black smoke worked again.
With these drivers I think the smoke goes white every dawn/dusk, not sure though.
