It did about 45 degrees left turn to match my turn .. and then, when it got into my rear hemisphere .. it lost me. It just stopped to turn and continued stright. Well I went like 'phew .. that was close' .. but what exactly happened there ?

If the acoustic conditions were bad, it may have picked you up from the side, and then as its position changed so it was towards your rear, it could have lost you because the active signature of your sub is reduced dramatically for head on and stern on aspects.
So as it got a smaller return as it moved to a rear aspect, it may have lost you for just long enough that it started to search in the other direction for a moment and it passed far enough to your rear that you were out of its acquisition cone when it was close enough to reacquire you stern-on.
Pretty damn good active sonar behavior. I would have liked to see that in action.
