My maximum setting is 512x, but I very rarely go above 256x, unless I want to shorten the travelling time to a patrol area. I usually patrol a grid at either 64x or 128x max. (these are in map view only). My max setting for external view I have set at 4x max. but I usually like to travel on the surface in real time.

It's just a matter of personal preference I suppose, but I have found that running above 512x can sometimes freeze the screen or become a bit jerky, so I altered my max to 512x in SH3 Commander. Running above 1024x is a bit over the top if you ask me, especially 4096x unless you want to cross the Atlantic at super sonic speed.
