I believe he is talking about the incessant ringing of church bells at various times of day, not people knocking on his door every 15 minutes trying to convert him.
Honestly if I lived somewhere that had church bells ringing every 15 minutes for 2 hours at the crack of dawn every morning, I'd prefer people knocking on my door. At least I'd have a shot at sleeping through the latter.
