Late in the evening of 17 June, 1943, U-93 commanded by KaptLt. Hoffmann detected sounds from a large convoy moving east through Kriegsmarine Grid Square BF17 inbound with vital war materials. With a daring approach U-93 skillfully penetrated the escort screen sinking 2 merchants and damaging another 2 before diving deep. During the next several hours the escorts depth charged U-93 with commendable accuracy. At 2300 hours U-93 took a near direct hit which caused substantial damage to the forward torpedo room. The bow tubes began taking water and the boat began to drift ever deeper. as damage control teams worked feverishly to stop the flooding the boats depth gauge passed its highest reading of 250 meters. Hoffman ordered the ballast blown and the boat began to rise, the crew placed scuttling charges nearing the surface and prepared to abandon ship.

Upon surfacing, the main vents were opened and the crew took to the water amid the flood of search lights. Hoffman and two officers were the last men to leave the boat.

U-93 sank by the bow at 2314 hrs
