From reading countless patrol reports, watching interviews, and reading in general from WW II submariners, I've found that about the only time they dived was to make a trim dive, sometimes after days on the surface, or to make a submerged torpedo attack..... and of course dive for aircraft. Of course at the beginning of the War they ran submerged during daylight hours, surfacing at night, however radar changed that.

I hit battle stations if I want the CR & CT manned, specifically the diving officer, planesmen, hydraulic manifold and trim manifold men, make the trim dive, surface, and secure from BS. According to what I've learned, there are about 13 men in the CR & CT at each station performing the dive. Hitting the BS typically produces close to that number of crew on a fleet-boat.

Does that help?

Happy Hunting!
