Yep, you'll have planes attack you at night if they have radar, in 44 some do. Not sure what you mean you don't see the contact, planes don't show up on the radar screen and if your crew gets a visial, you no longer get the visual radar contact on the map, game only uses one sensor at a time.
If you have APR, it will tell you what ship or planes have radar. I think with TMO, if you get a "single contact" it's always a plane. Seems radar contact is a ship, but check it, I haven't played in awhile.
If you're in an out of control dive, make sure you reverse engines opposite the down angle, going down by the bow you need to reverse, by the stern, stay forward. If that doesn't work, try hitting the P key with it, last measure, blow tanks.
