After some research I think it changed several times over the years.
Our last - famous - orthography reform allows both now - with a recommendation on "aufgrund".

In the last document I posted, although it showed the "Auf Grund" I did notice it shows the wrong rank for Dornitz...
It show him as "Konteradmiral" on 15. Novermber 1940. He was promoted to "Vizedadmiral" on 01. September 1940.
