IMO the U Boat radar as delivered in the game is nearly worthless, on the other hand I believe the radar warning capability is worth its weight in gold.
Personally I think the radar in SH2 was far superior both in clarity and tunability.

The radar in this game is a @#$%
I remember in SH2 i was able to sink ships in middle of the fog, aiming them with may deck gun using my radar bearing and range information

I need to see the knob to know if i have the radar adjusted in Short or Long range sacle.
