Indeed. Without spoiling too much, I just discovered something pretty huge the original inhabitants had left behind. Finding it (or rather "them") was quite a surprise after crawling through forest for many hours. And the evening light made it all the more dramatic.

It's just silly that no amount of falling will really hurt you. You can roll down from a huge mountain and the worst you'll get is fever. Take some pills and ta-dah: problem solved. It's sometimes even more convenient to make suicide jumps instead of trying to find a gentle track going down.

I run only if I know I can't hide. That is, if the thing is coming straight at me and growling. It's pretty fast runner, though I have once managed to lose it by jumping over some obstacles and then hiding as soon as possible.
As a general rule, as soon as your heart starts beating, duck and hide. Don't start thinking where, just do it. Any cover is better than no cover. From your initial hiding place you can start locating the beast and looking for better cover.
If it comes near you, stay still and when it's not looking, move carefully away from it. Always try to keep something between it and you. It also helps to have some mental stimulants with you, as they will give you ability to "sense" it when crouching and standing still. I suggest trying to synthetize the permanent enhancement as soon as possible. It's pretty easy, since both of the ingredients can be found from a relatively small area. But not spoiling it for you any more than that.
