Ok, so I recently got star shells back into my game which was a headache but worth it because I really like the star shells even though they are suicide on patrol. I usually launch them around home port and just for fun.

For months I tried to figure out some practical use for those things. The only thing I could come up with is deck gun attacks on blackest night.
Are these things historical, and if so, does anyone know how they were used?
