From one noob to another...sort of...

In simple terms, each grid square is sub-divided into nine squares, which are further divided into nine more squares. Each set of sub-divisions is numbered left-to-right in rows across from top to bottom; top row is 1-2-3, second row is 4-5-6 and bottom row is 7-8-9. Thus, grid square AN4394 means the middle-left square of the lower right square of AN43.

In directional terms that position is in the middle-western square of the southeastern square of AN43. Confusing? Sketch it out on a piece of graph paper for clarity. Hope that helps.
