This is a question I often ask other wargamers---why is WWII so hugely popular as a gaming era? I think the answer is that WWII is the last, no-holds barred war where you had massive land/sea/air battles. Sure, with each passing year, the tactics and equipment of WWII becomes less and less relevant to the modern-era of warfare (all things being equal), but it still remains the defining military experience of recent history. And when it comes to naval warfare, it is the most recent period of history where subs and ships actually got a chance to do what they were built to do---destroy other ships en masse. So, I guess you could say that WWII is the paradigm of warfare on a massive scale simply by default. And I guess that is a good thing too!
