Myself, I would just start on a normal approach course at best speed and proceed from there. Once I'm close enough to see something, I would either start a tactical approach, or make an end-around. I've never tried to obtain a firing solution from sound only. Rather, I just try to get a "feel" for the situation so I can get within sighting distance.
