Why? Ratings. News reporting is no longer a public service, but an entertainment venue to be sold. No one is going to be interested in the report that New England was hit by a big storm, but New Englanders being who they are, are handling it as they a ways do.

Perhaps you are not unfortunate enough to live in an area with a dictatorial HOA who will fine you if the walk is not cleared 0.1 seconds after the last flake falls.
