Back when I was a devout believer Jonah was always one of my favorite stories. This wasn't because of the whale, but because everybody always seemed to focus on the whale and miss the whole point of the story, which was that God told Jonah to preach to the people of Nineveh, and if they repented God would allow them to live. Jonah hated the Ninevites, and didn't want them to live, which was the whole point of his running away. He figured that if he didn't preach to them they couldn't repent, and God would have to destroy them. Jonah thought he could outwit God, which didn't work out quite like he planned.
