I will often just take three sound bearings and guess how far away the target is. From these 3 bearing you can work out a intercept course.
Speed to area where you think you will see the target.
If it is not there - start again with more bearings from hydro (one will usually do now)
When target is in sight - use visual methods to get solution and to work out a good attack position.
