But imagine if he was actually trying to ban people from having or adopting certain types of kids (stupid "what if" I know) then claimed to understand parent's anxiety over his proposals because he had some kids himself that nobody had ever saw or heard of before. Think folks would be a bit skeptical?

The comparision would be better if he would try to ban "assault kids": "This kid looks like it could wear camo clothes one day. It also posesses two hands, it could strangle somebody - sorry, you can't have it!"
I remember when the old Bush said he doesn't like Broccoli - and the crapstorm he got for it. "how could he say this, Broccoli is healthy, the Pres is supposed to be a role model for the kids, yada, yada..." Hey, at least it was an honest statement about his personal preferences - probably the only point in which I agreed with him.

For reasons like that, politicians (and their PR crew) think twice before saying anything personal in the media age.
Wheather or not Obama likes skeet shooting, he plays by the rules of the modern PR circus: "Look, I'm one of you!" - just like the pics W. published , with the rolled up sleeves, working on his ranch.
Skeet shooting is a safe bet, even the majority of anti-gun folks would say nothing against using a gun for this purposes. So he plays the media flute.
The other thing is, publishing photos of him shooting clay pdgeons, would give the conspiracy nuts much more importance and attention than they deserve. The second a photo of him with a gun is shown, guys like Alex Jones would publish several pages, about the 1478 proofs why the pic is forged.
