Historically that is correct that they can hear you no matter how deep you go.
For first year of war English destroyers did not sunk many U-Boots mostly because they believed that German subs can not submerge that deep so their charges were missing all the way.
They used
AZTEC , that is Aztec Underwater Detection system, pretty good stuff for finding subs and numbers confirm that.
Kriegsmarine had 40 000 submariners and 30 00 died till the end of the war. Highest mortality rate of all sides in war.
