When i started with SH5, i didn't even tried the broken vanilla game, and i don't regret
If i was you, with fresh install and game updated to V1.2, i would start in first step patching SH5 with TDW generic patcher.
To me, it's a must!

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=197960 it's quite easy to get rid of stock bugs + new cool features.
After, you get a Generic Patcher folder that you will use as a mod (always activated in first place)
Then, or you use SH5 only with the Generic Patcher mod, or you add some more mods to adjust/correct SH5 to your liking...
I would recomand the FX update + New Uis 7.1 interface + IRAI as essentials for a start!
But there are so many awesome mods around here, it's hard to know what you would like!
And also depending on your PC abilities...
