The only way, until a Type IX mod is completed, is to use the Sort of .IX Boat mod v1a. That will give you the extra range and torpedos of the Type IX.

I use it with the VC41 - Start with in beginning of campaign mod.

Tho not correct for the early war years, it's so much better using these mods together.
