tens of thousands have been killed in these accidents. if you end up killing someone on the road while intoxicated you're facing manslaughter charges and possibly the end of your free life. Not that some people would want to live with the gilt that you actually killed someone because of your behavior. never. get a taxi, stay there, have a friend pick you up, whatever, never get behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated.

My squadron commander in Germany had the great idea of contacting the local taxi companies and started a program where every single member of the squadron was given a card which had their name and rank on it and the base address to the Squadron HQ.This way even if the airman had no money he would give the cab driver the card with his name on it and the cab driver could go to the HQ and someone would find the person owning and make them pay.
A friend can be risky better make it one that you know for sure does not drink and is dedicated enough to aid you at any hour(may not always be the case).
There have been cases where people have called friends for a ride and the friend showed to drive them home....drunk themselves.
The DOT estimates that around 40% of all traffic accidents resulting in deaths are caused by alcohol. That is still a large number though.
In 2009 35,000 people total died in traffic accidents so about 14,000 of those deaths where caused by alcohol.
