As far as movies go, I haven't ever really understood why on every independence day we show on TV the 1955 version of a movie depicting the Continuation War and not a movie depicting the Winter War.
If we absolutely have to show a movie of either, I mean: another thing I have never understood is why the independence day seems to be an exclusive war commemoration day, as if there wasn't anything else to talk about in the history of independent Finland. And why it has to be so stupidly gloomy too? We are celebrating independence by remembering all the things that sucked in our history? I'm all for respecting the veterans and remembering the wars (the collective myths related to them not so much) but can't we do something else too?
(And no, following the president's party and gossiping about the clothes of the guests doesn't count.
