Always a wise attitude. Unfortunately, people have learned that well meaning people can be deceived by the reference to "charity"
If they are a legitimate charity in the US you can always pull their IRS form 990 as they are public documents.
A while ago there was this "charity" for disabled vets. Upon investigation it was shown that the jerk who ran it was taking 99% for administrative costs (salary for him and his wife). $0.01 for every dollar went to a vet charity.
People suck, always always check out a charity before donating.
