I agree with Armistead to play the game without cheating to see where the ships are. That takes away from the whole experience.
Your sonar works fine on the surface except for the S-boat. Always pay attention for in game lagging or stutter, means a group just entered your contact zone. Man sonar yourself to find it once you notice lag. Some people keep the stop watch up so they can notice better.

Early war is the time to find the large invasion fleets.
