It's funny how many times this topic comes up. I had the same issue the first time I started playing these mods. What I didn't understand until later was that I didn't start off having a radar on the boat. I would just sail around waiting for ships to show up on the map and get frustrated when they didn't. I could not understand how others found convoys in the areas I was in. Then I read about having to dive and listen for ships did I start to find them.
I still have a tough time finding ships early in the war but it's getting better. I also DL'ed Convoy Routes to see if it would help any but that just tells where they could be not where they are. Later in the war when you get radar things get a little better. I didn't want to start out with a boat with all the bells and whistles. I wanted to work my way up.
I agree with Armistead to play the game without cheating to see where the ships are. That takes away from the whole experience.
