Hardegen was in the Kreigsmarine from 1934-45 so it would be realistic in some cases to have a career lasting the whole war although he only served on u-boats from mid 1939 to mid 1942. The two biggest ways to cheat in my opinion are 1- Attacking harbors, and 2- Using the mission editor to find exact locations of ships on a given date, so try to avoid these. As an alternative to looking at the mission editor, I would highly recommend "Operation Spinnennetz" which is a realistic program where real players report information about single ships and convoys to BDU. It helps show patterns like shipping lanes and is a realistic way to find hotspots. There is a link below. As far as raiding harbors, this was only done once in WWII by Gunther Prien and that was early in the war. This was mentioned previously but realistically captains didn't engage airplanes unless they had to. A common tactic was to shoot at the airplane on the first pass, then dive so the boat wasn't caught vulnerable at shallow depth. Finally, try to limit your time compression to x512 when crossing long distances and to x128 when you are in or near enemy territory. This way you will encounter more ships and planes. I'm glad you brought up this topic because I am very interested in this too. Have a great day and good hunting!
