Then you have a choice: Real Fleet Boat (RFB) for fairly strict realism (as much as can be gleaned from SH4 without changing the code, which is a copyright no-no), or Trigger Maru Overhauled (TMO), for somewhat less realism, more action, and a compensatory better chance to die.
RFB puts the "hunter" in Silent Hunter. Just finding targets can be frustrating for a noob. (Best to start out from Manila. You'll have an old Sugarboat, but the targets will find you!)
TMO provides a more target-rich environment, but the enemy ASW is seriously deadly. If the problem in RFB is finding targets, the problem in TMO is staying alive. Also, TMO has some lingering European atmospherics that some find jarring in a US Navy simulation.
Both are free, and both are compatible with numerous other mods which can add to the in-game experience: graphics, gameplay, atmospherics. I'd suggest you try both of them for a while, then decide which you enjoy the most.
Whichever way you go, the Run Silent Run Deep Campaign (RSRDC) mod will install seamlessly over the top and is essential if you want the sim to be played out in the middle of the Pacific War.
Godspeed!
