I think the issue might be that the space in your medal case is not for the same ordinary U-Boat War Badge as the one the crews get, but the
'diamond' version (only 12 of which were ever awarded). This might explain why we have to wait for ages for it rather than getting it on our 1/2nd patrol like the rest of the men. In reality as has been said you'd almost certainly already have it, maybe the game takes it as read.
