Then you're stuck with a download that doesn't work properly, and you could have one heck of a time getting support or a refund.

I know Steam is becoming all the rage right now by the game manufacturers, but it's kinda like UBI's requirements to be connected on the internet and connected to them to play their games. I don't go for that even tho I do have a couple I like very much that must be played with a Steam connection.
