No, I meant the black SH3 startup screen. The question is what was meant by "Doesn't even get to the Ubisoft-thingy"?
If it gets past the SH3 startup screen, then it sounds like a WMV file problem. If he doesn't have RUb or IUb, maybe he's got DirectX problems.
In any case, as you suggested, mods or no mods, it pays to rename the 2 WMV files and see if SH3 starts up normally without them.
