There was a simulation called Harpoon2 that has been resurrected and improved as Harpoon3 (modern naval combat). In Harpoon2-3, you can set a waypoint/destination and the sim will automatically chart a minimum distance path that also avoids land. If you want to tweak this path, you can do so. Thus, in SH3, if you were leaving Kiel and had a destination of AM26, you'd just set a waypoint in, say, the middle of AM26 and you'd get a minimum distance course to it that wouldn't go through the middle of England. The course would likely go south of the Orkneys which you'd want to change but that would be easy to accomplish. Or, you could have set an intermediate waypoint in the Denmark Strait, thence to AM26.
