The mods help make the game more playable/enjoyable, or more realistic. Good mods will have a nice guide to install, like Cybermat47 said, with JSGME. All the details for using JSGME and installing mods will be on the forum somewhere, it may take a little finding, but ask a question and you're sure to get a positive, polite, accurate response from this lovely community.
