Ihave seen some posts about re-installing a clean copy for mod install. Is this par for the course. Also, the search on this forum doesn't seem to be very helpful; then again, maybe I don't know how to put correct search words in.

No, you are correct - the search function of this forum is not the best one. A lost of people (including myself) use google ability to search sites: i.e. "newui site:subsim.com"
Also, if you will look through SH5 Mods Workshop forum, you will find a lot of information on mods.
In regards to locations of the files: the modders place their mods whenever they want. mediafire is one of the locations, but it doesn't mean that ALL of the files are there. Depends on the modder and their prefference at the time of the creation of the mod.
In regards to steam: most of the mods work fine with the Steam version.
What DOES NOT work is the so-called "unnoficial SH5 .exe patch" made by TDW. It fixes a huge amount of vanila problems (i.e. hydrophone is actually WORKING after that patch).
