To me, it seems that the angst comes from two groups:
1. Conspiracy theorists who thrive on this kind of stuff. No amount of proof will ever satiate their need to see themselves as part of something bigger. See the Truther movement.
2. Team R true believers that are still butthurt over 2008. The fact that bin Laden was killed on Obama's watch only adds to their frustration.
As for the 'author' (he no doubt had a ghostwriter) of this book, I'd say that you're right; he wants to cash in on his involvement. Military service does not render one immune to greed.
