That's what I did too, replaced FX-5900 with Radeon/ATi card, no more smoke problem.
The only Geforce driver I've tried that wasn't affected by with white smoke and sun-angles, were v61.77 drivers (61.77_win2kxp_english.exe) which Soviet_Warlord mentioned to try a while back.
Camera/sun view showed black smoke from ships properly, yet sometimes after re-loading a save-game, or spotting a ship after an evening of patrolling (during daylight), smoke went white again.
I had to 'pause' the game, ALT-TAB out, then back to the game again. Black smoke then worked again. If I didn't pause the game first, nothing was fixed.
It's not perfect but better than nothing. Other Geforce drivers didn't produce constant black-smoke like the v61.77's.
If Geforce had ever fixed the black-smoke problem with FX cards, I wouldn't have had a reason to even try another brand video card. Kinda glad I did though

Lol its funny that you remember that I said that... I don't ... feels like ages ago
--- Yes, everyone, what Average Joe said, I believe is correct. Try it. I remember that one Nvidia driver version solved the problem, but I forgot which one. I'm gettings too used to ATI now :P
