I used that black "sound absorbent" coating on the VIIB and I had no idea if it was working or not. I guess it's something you'll really have to look in the files to see if using it gives any kind of noise percentage cut. I imagine it wouldn't be terribly hard to find or even to make work if it needs it. Maybe somewhere as simple as the cfg files... I think I might have a look myself 'cause I plan to use it again when it becomes available to me.
I don't like the homing torpedo's either except I keep one or two on board for sticky situations. Great for (theoretically) knocking out the DD that's been harrassing me I'll use the good ol' TI for night attacks and the TIII (I think, The fast electric one) for daytime. My favorite will always be the 105mm deck gun when-ever possible Arrrrgh
