I have it in my head that a VIIC will go deeper, and cope better with sustained depth charges than a VIIB.

Speed is great but only really when crash diving.

Whether you are doing 2, 3 or 4 knots submerged doesn't really matter if the escorts are charging about doing 25; but using the third dimension of the sea does. Because the ability to go deeper means that the depth charge must take longer to reach us, and therefore give us more time to scoot away from the splash, but also, the deeper it has to be set for, the less, by the increased water pressure surrounding it, will be the explosive impact.

Neither is any substitute for shrewd boat handling, of course, and whatever type of boat we take out, it is in that we must place our trust.
