I think at that distance they would have been quite safe. Nuclear explosion watching was quite the past-time in the 50s, heck Las Vegas started up that way! I didn't know that they had nuclear air to air missiles though, that would have done some work on a bomber formation...

The men I feel sorry for though, are those who were ordered to walk into the area of ground zero after a ground-burst or near-ground-burst initiation.

Another reason to be grateful for Japan surrendering after Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In the plans for Operation Downfall there would have been between seven and fifteen atomic weapons ready to be dropped to clear the way for US troops which would have advanced through the detonation area less than 48 hours after the bomb had gone off, given them a nice healthy radiation dose thanks to the fallout.
