My sister lives in mosquito county and she has planted catnip. Of course it's no 100% protection, but it seems to do the trick for her.
AVG's idea is a good sollution for camping, apparently those creepers don't like the lemon smell.
I have heard lemongrass should also work, but never tested it by myself. My favorite DEET-free spray is made of Corymbia citriodora (Lemon eucalyptus) - though I don't know if a 30m tall tree from Aussieland survives in an Alpine climate...
