The RUB (Real U-Boat) mod does something completely different, and in my opinion much better. It disables the renown 'hit' for having 'Map Contact Updates' enabled, but it changes the map itself. When you have visual contact you see a square or diamond, but no colors, and it's only listed as 'Unknown' unless you have the WO identify it, or type it in yourself.
With hydrophone contacts you see a dotted line, representing the WO drawing on the map. It gives the direction and type (warship, merchant) of contact, but nothing else. It's much less distinct than the stock version, and doesn't give the distance, but it's there on the map for you to see.
