I did install it in a separate folder I call Games, as I do with all my games. It was a fresh install no other mods. The 4gb patch was the only thing that fixed it for me. It must have been trying to run in 2gb of RAM and hitting its limit causing the CTDs. I think the patch gave it more "breathing" room allowing the program to use more of my 6GB, fixing the problem. That is weird that you did not have to do this, but I did. I guess it was just a difference in hardware.
