Meh, ive come to learn that certain boats grow on you. I used to be a staunch user of the VII boats, and nothing but. Didnt give the type9s a second thought. Over time, well, they just sort of grew on me, and well, im hardly ever in a type 7 anymore.
The 2nd flotilla has become my favorite, my patrols usually last 70+ days, i get to go to far away places, and it beats the heck out of the usually "wait for a convoy" in the north atlantic. This isnt to say i can't or dont attack convoy's. Oh belive me i do, and with alot more thunder then a type 7 can bring to bear.
Before escorts start using radar more reguarlly, once you latch on to a convoy with a type 9, the fish start flying. Rush in fire two salvos', turn on your heal, shoot one more salvo, then go reload your tubes and hit em again!
A type 9s dive time is slower, but not that much slower. Going to flank before crash diving helps. The problem with Sh3 is it doesnt accuratly model the dive time that is listed in the manual. All 3 of which dive at about the same rate, although the IXD2 seems noticably slower. WHile modding, ive noticed the Main BT flooding for say a type 7B i think is around 9000. A type 7C is around 10000 (amazingly the XXI is 20,000 main BT flooding). All type 9s are listed at 7000 Main BT flooding.
Ive moded my game so the IXB has a BT flood rate of 9000 (similar to the VIIB which dives slower then the VIIB). IT dives faster, but not as fast as the VIIB. I made the IXC have a floodrate of 8000, and left the IXD2 at 7000 flood rateing. End result, in my game, the IXB has a crash time of around 31-32 seconds, the IXB around 33-34 seconds, and the IXD2 around 42 seconds. Thats how i think it should be with the VIIC still king of the hill at 27 seconds crash time.
Anyway, IX boats, if they grow on you, you come to love em. I think i may release my personal mods soon.
