If the abuse is irrational, frequent and humiliating...it doesn't matter how tough it is, it does ware you down eventually.
The guy wasn't cracking up in front of the crew. He was carrying on with the watch, internalising the anger and when in the relative privacy of his cabin - he had to release it. There are only a few ways people release that sort of tension...they go for a walk (impossible on a sub), they do exercise (almost impossible on a sub), they break something (not an option on a sub) or they cry.
