Right, that's what I've been doing, but that pings for depth, which you may not want to do esp if you know escorts are in the area. SHII had an indicator line on the depth gauge that always showed the bottom depth. Maybe that was a little artificial, but then again U-boats would have had decent chart information showing depths in coastal areas. As it is in SHIII unless you ping for depth, you have no idea as far as I can see.
