I started playing with map contacts off a year ago ( in SH4 and SH5) and haven't looked back. It may not be totally realistic in that you would have officers at the plotting table plotting your targets for you but I think you just get too much accurate information with them on. Map contacts on simulates this help you would get but in my opinion, it is too much of an "assist." Map contacts off takes some getting used to and you will be frustrated at times but it has to be similar to what a real captain felt.
