Yeah. Other than the renown hit for sinking the neutral and being branded "renegade" for 24 hours, there are no real consequences. Erich Topp sank the USS
Reuben James because he mistook it for a
British* destroyer. Despite American outrage,
that wasn't enough to get America into the war.
*This was due to the "Bases for Destroyers" agreement between Great Britain and the United States. The US gave Britain its surplus Wickes Class and Clemson Class destroyers.
Reuben James was a Clemson class destroyer defending a British convoy. Given the conditions, it would have been a logical conclusion that the target was a Town Class (former Wickes or Clemson) Lend-Lease.
