I'd start a career, and transit at 1xTC whilst skimming through the manual for the bits on operating your boot. The best of both worlds - just keep one eye on the screen for vessels and/or land - particularly if you're in transit through the Kattegat out of Kiel.
And definately get Commander like Tinman recommends.
