Whether someting is a fail for a company or not has not much to do with reality, but with marketing and "hype", and sometimes with sheer extortion (remember MS against IBM's OS/2 back then? Also a better system.).
Windows has always been the lesser system, as had VHS against video 2000, but somehow they are in charge, and the others/better failed.

On the other hand Unix/Linux has a better implementation of security, and the properties and rights on viewing content or changing files are much more fine-grained, than even Windows server 2008 R2 is able to.

But also Apple is not made for a network solution, it has always provided single-place workstations, by Steve Jobs' own idea e.g. a graphics genius should sit in front of a big Apple workplace, and do his stuff. No real multi-user support in big networks, and teamworking. This was just not the focus of Apple, and MS is currentlly the biggest in just that.

Win8 has been made as an answer to Apple's ipad software, i cannot quite imagine people in companies sitting in front of 50" monitors and ridiculously moving their hands all over the screen to copy and paste some files - but for that purpose you can switch back your Win8 to normal mouse operation.
